Marine Solutions recently completed field investigations in support of Engineering Condition Assessments of waterfront facilities throughout Puerto Rico. The work was performed for the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) on behalf of the Puerto Rico Port Authority (PRPA). Marine Solutions was involved in 10 separate task orders including the inspection and assessment of more than 21,000 linear feet of bulkheads, 6,200 piles, and 6,800 linear feet of revetment, causeway, or shoreline. In addition to routine above water and underwater inspections, several tasks included tie-rod excavations and investigation, and one task required mooring and dredge analysis.
All field work was completed within a period of seven weeks, and condition assessment reports were submitted within 10 days of completion of the field work. The project was a true team effort with support from all offices.

American Electric Power (AEP) contracted Marine Solutions to provide a floating platform, steel repairs, high pressure cleaning and inspections to the Head Gate Roller track guides and intake structures. In order to provide these services, we assembled an 80’ x 60’ x 5’ tall barge platform to include a 40-ton crane, two decompression chambers and 5120 compressors, dive bell, LARS system for placing the bell in the water, mixed gas diving spread, and of course a LARGE assortment of tools and supplies required to complete the project. This is the first mixed gas project Marine Solutions has been awarded. The project includes performing dives up to 200 feet deep. When diving to depths for long periods of time over 150 deep, mixed gas is typically required. The term mixed gas is used to represent a breathing mixture of helium and oxygen or Heliox. The use of mixed gas or Heliox requires a lot of additional equipment, training, and experience. Our first mixed gas dive to 198 feet was completed on May 15th and all went as planned.

Marine Solutions recently purchased a DJI - Mavic Pro aerial drone! Considering an entry level model to get our feet wet, (well, hopefully not, but it will have flotation), the drone’s maiden flights will be to assist inspections of elevated truss walkways and to aid in the inspections of mooring cells that often tower 50 feet or more above the water. Perhaps more significantly, it will be used to begin to explore many options to improve our services and reduce risks such as inspecting elevated bridge components, creating up to date site aerial views, view long reaches of shoreline and coastal structures.

In order to celebrate our 10th Anniversary, we loaded up and headed to Hanover, Maryland to experience some team building and fun! Our Team Retreat was held at Terrapin Adventures where we found better, more effective ways to communicate and work with each other through a series of Team Building Activities which included a zip line, giant swing and high ropes course. This was a great way to improve cohesiveness and communication. To view our full album from the event click here.
On May 21, 2007, we opened our doors at our 1100 sq. ft. office/warehouse space on Gold Rush Drive in Lexington, Kentucky.
Ten years ago, our Vice President Don Wilkins went to work at the new office for the very first time while our President Amy Wilkins was working on getting things set up from home (and juggling a 1 and 2 year old and puppy). Later that morning, we received a call from Stantec - it was our lucky day! Someone had managed to get their house boat stuck on Dam 4 and we were being called in to assist in the recovery effort which ended up paying $919.50. We were thrilled to be off to such a great start!
While there has been many ups and downs since that first day, we would like to take a minute and look at where we are today. We have locations in Nicholasville, KY; Rosedale, MD; Newark, NJ; and New York, NY with over 50 employees. Our staff's dedication to providing exceptional quality of service while always maintaining safety has been key to our success. We would not be here without all of their hard work, long hours, and commitment to safety and excellence.
We would like to thank our employees, clients, and community for your dedication and loyalty to Marine Solutions - it is greatly appreciated. We look forward to what we can accomplish together in the next 10 years!
Need a hydrographic survey? Does a structure have a scour problem? Do you need dredge quantities? Would you like a 3D model of a submerged structure? If your answer is "yes" to any of these questions we can help with our multibeam sonar! Multibeam surveys offer considerable advantages over traditional single beam surveys. Instead of running intermittent lines with a single sonar beam and interpolating depths between the lines, multibeams use a swath of hundreds of beams to provide “100 percent” coverage of the seafloor. This provides for identification and visualization of underwater objects, hazards to navigations and other features.
Marine Solutions owns and operates a high resolution mutibeam sonar. Our sonar is coupled with an Applanix POS MV providing accurate attitude, heading, heave, position, and velocity data, using the latest Inertially-Aided Real-Time Kinematic (IARTK)/GPS technology. Additionally, positioning data is post processed using observations from the CORS Network to provide the most accurate positioning information available. Marine Solutions is using a variety of collection and processing software packages to gather and process survey data. The software used can provide the data in all common formats that a client may desire and provides interactive models of survey data that can be viewed using free software.
