Contact Amanda at: 23 Fontana Lane, Ste 102 Rosedale, MD 21237 (443) 484-2394 aschindhelm@MSImarinesolutions.com Here at Marine Solutions, we love to see Throwback Thursday pictures of our employees! This Thursday, we have a special throwback pertaining to our Senior Project Manager out of our NJ/NY office - Matt Daniels, PE. Before we take it back to August 2009 at Ellis Island, we have to give some history on the Island itself! Ellis Island, now a 27.5-acre site located in the upper bay just off the New Jersey coast, is likely to connect with more of the American population than any other spot in the country. It has been estimated that nearly half of all Americans today can trace their family history to at least one person who passed through the Port of New York at Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the gateway for over 12 million immigrants to the U.S. as the United States' busiest immigrant inspection station for over 60 years from 1892 until 1954. The above photos/project dates back to Matt's first year of his career where he helped inspect the granite and concrete seawall around the perimeter of the island in advance of a major seawall rehab project. Above, Matt can be seen about to enter the water on the south side of the island within the ferry slip. Diving was coordinated around the ferries that provide the only tourist access to the island. Diving at the site was a special experience for Matt as his grandfather immigrated to the US through NY Harbor in the 1940’s. Even though the receiving center at Ellis Island was moved by then, the building in view houses the museum and records for all those whom immigrated to the US through NY Harbor during that time. Matt's Grandfather’s name is engraved in the American Immigrant Wall of Honor on the north side of the island (just beyond the right side of the photo frame). During the project, he got to dive the portion of seawall right in front of that section of wall as well as roughly 25% of the island’s perimeter. Marine Solutions recently completed field investigations in support of Engineering Condition Assessments of waterfront facilities throughout Puerto Rico. The work was performed for the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) on behalf of the Puerto Rico Port Authority (PRPA). Marine Solutions was involved in 10 separate task orders including the inspection and assessment of more than 21,000 linear feet of bulkheads, 6,200 piles, and 6,800 linear feet of revetment, causeway, or shoreline. In addition to routine above water and underwater inspections, several tasks included tie-rod excavations and investigation, and one task required mooring and dredge analysis.
All field work was completed within a period of seven weeks, and condition assessment reports were submitted within 10 days of completion of the field work. The project was a true team effort with support from all offices. © 2018 Marine Solutions, Inc. We're breezing through Safe + Sound Week and as part of our campaign support, we've asked our employees to share why safety matters to them. This activity has the ability to get managers and workers thinking about and discussing what safety on the job means to them. Check them out! Marine Solutions is participating in Safe + Sound Week, August 13-19, 2018. This is a nationwide event to raise awareness and understanding of the value of safety and health programs that include management leadership, worker participation, and a systematic approach to finding and fixing hazards. At Marine Solutions, safety is our #1 priority. Our safety assurance plans are built upon experience and knowledge of the applicable hazards and providing the right personnel and equipment for specific tasks. For more information about our health program/efforts, please contact our Director of Safety & Compliance, Robert Fisher. Robert Fisher, Director of Safety & Compliance Office (859) 260-1055 Email: rfisher@MSImarinesolutions.com American Electric Power (AEP) contracted Marine Solutions to provide a floating platform, steel repairs, high pressure cleaning and inspections to the Head Gate Roller track guides and intake structures. In order to provide these services, we assembled an 80’ x 60’ x 5’ tall barge platform to include a 40-ton crane, two decompression chambers and 5120 compressors, dive bell, LARS system for placing the bell in the water, mixed gas diving spread, and of course a LARGE assortment of tools and supplies required to complete the project. This is the first mixed gas project Marine Solutions has been awarded. The project includes performing dives up to 200 feet deep. When diving to depths for long periods of time over 150 deep, mixed gas is typically required. The term mixed gas is used to represent a breathing mixture of helium and oxygen or Heliox. The use of mixed gas or Heliox requires a lot of additional equipment, training, and experience. Our first mixed gas dive to 198 feet was completed on May 15th and all went as planned.
© 2018 Marine Solutions, Inc. Marine Solutions recently purchased a DJI - Mavic Pro aerial drone! Considering an entry level model to get our feet wet, (well, hopefully not, but it will have flotation), the drone’s maiden flights will be to assist inspections of elevated truss walkways and to aid in the inspections of mooring cells that often tower 50 feet or more above the water. Perhaps more significantly, it will be used to begin to explore many options to improve our services and reduce risks such as inspecting elevated bridge components, creating up to date site aerial views, view long reaches of shoreline and coastal structures.
