Seawall Repair Design, United States Naval Academy
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Annapolis, MD During a routine inspection, Marine Solutions discovered excessive corrosion in the steel sheet pile bulkheads within the Santee Basin and Farragut Field at the U.S. Naval Academy, leading to massive sinkholes developing inboard of the bulkheads. Marine Solutions was tasked with a design level inspection and repair designs for the deteriorated bulkheads to restore the waterfront seawalls. This project involved extensive coordination with subconsultants for geotechnical site investigations, utility investigations, site surveys, and environmental permitting. Various alternatives to repair the walls were explored, including driving outboard sheet piles, pressure grouting behind the existing walls, and retrofitting the tie-back systems, among other options. The design is ongoing and includes a new tieback anchorage system to meet requirements including sea level rise, storm surge, and extreme event considerations while maintaining a future lifespan to support anticipated facility activities. |
