Canal and Lock Inspections
New York State Canal Corp.
The New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC), a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), manages the statewide canal system which includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca canals. The canal system is a National Historic Landmark that passes commercial and pleasure vessels between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. The waterway links the Hudson River with the Great Lakes, the Finger Lakes, and Lake Champlain. The waterway, now spanning 524 miles, is one of the most important projects in the development and success of New York.
Marine Solutions was contracted to perform routine underwater inspections of 18 locks on the Erie, Champlain, and Oswego Canals. The inspections included 100 percent Level I visual inspection of all submerged lock elements including the lock walls, gates, conduits, and valves. Marine Solutions performed the inspections with the purpose of keeping the locks functional while maintaining historical preservation. Following the inspection, inspection reports were prepared, with repair recommendations included.
