#MakingWavesWednesday Our Marine Solutions family wanted to help brighten the holidays for some families that were impacted by this historically difficult year. Everyone can use a little kindness this year, and a little effort can go a long way. If you're able to sponsor a family or help out people in need, please check out your local Salvation Army or food banks to help give a family a Christmas to remember.
We mourn the loss of our friend and colleague Adam Davis, 36, who passed away from Leiomyosarcoma, peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 7, at his home in Lexington, KY. Our hearts break for his wife, Jamie and two children, Stella and Charlie, to whom he was devoted and loved wholeheartedly. Adam Davis was a Senior Project Engineer and had been at Marine Solutions for 8 years specializing in bridges and marine structures. He was the first engineer hired by Marine Solutions and was a leading character in the story of this company that shaped our early chapters. He was a very special person and kind in a world where kindness is important as ever. Adam was a great person with a smile that would light up a room. He was someone that inspires those around him to be better. No matter how hard the situation was, Adam did not give up. He remained positive, and by doing so he changed the world. He changed us. Adam reflected the best qualities of an engineer, colleague, and friend. He was an inspiration for us all. We will miss him dearly. If you would like to donate to the Leiomyosarcoma Support & Research foundation in memory of Adam, you can do so here. We are proud to announce that we are expanding by opening an office in Paducah, Kentucky! We have purchased a facility that fully supports immediately offering local engineering and commercial diving services to Paducah and beyond along the Mississippi Valley. Sean Anderson, native to far western Kentucky, will lead the office and local activities. Bob Hendricks, Business Development Manager, has already relocated to join Sean in Paducah to continue supporting our existing clients and developing new relationships throughout the region and beyond. Additional staffing and equipment realignments are in progress as we occupy the new office location to support full service capabilities. Paducah is a classic river town and strategic hub of the inland river system situated in the midst of the confluence of four navigable rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and Cumberland). It serves as a center for barge commodity switching, vessel maintenance, as well as the corporate headquarters to many inland river towing and support companies. It is also the home of the USCG Towing Vessel Nation Center of Expertise. This opportunity and countless more on the horizon are the fruit of our teams diligence to perform with integrity, work safely and efficiently, be dependable, and stand out by going above and beyond. Frankfort, Ky. (September 9, 2020) – Edward Jones, Houchens Insurance Group and MiddleGround Capital were ranked the 2020 Best Places to Work in Kentucky by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM).
During the 16th Annual Best Places to Work in Kentucky virtual awards ceremony, presented by ClearPath Mutual Insurance Company, nearly 2,000 joined the online celebration of the 100 Kentucky companies who were recognized for their commitment to focus, measure and move their workplace environments toward excellence. The list of companies who made the 2020 list was announced in January. Then in March the COVID19 pandemic changed our world. With social distancing becoming our new norm and affecting the way we interact with each other, the awards ceremony shifted to a virtual celebration of our winners and their rankings. The 100 winning companies participated in a comprehensive survey process and were then ranked according to those results. The list consists of three categories: small companies of 15-149 employees, medium companies of 150-499 employees and large companies consisting of more than 500 employees (categories based on number of U.S. employees, only Kentucky employees surveyed). Edward Jones, the top winner in the large category, offers associates flexible, family-friendly workplaces and gratifying work helping clients in neighborhoods where they live and work. Financial advisors and branch office administrator teams who serve clients well earn the firm’s highest honors. Edward Jones has made the list for 15 years and last year was ranked first in the large category. Houchens Insurance Group, the top winner in the medium category, is a family of agencies, taking the success of each individual agency and utilizing their expertise to create the power of HIG, directly impacting the clients they serve. Houchens Insurance Group was ranked third in the medium category last year and has made the list seven years. MiddleGround Capital, the top winner in the small category is a private equity firm, which makes it a priority to invest in its people as equally as its companies. Doing so has earned respect, loyalty, and dedication of its employees who feel challenged yet valued every day. MiddleGround Capital has made the list for the first time. Now in its 16th year, the Best Places to Work in Kentucky program has recognized a combined 308 unique Kentucky companies with 213 of those making the list more than once. Special recognition to the two companies that have made the list for all 16 years – Dean Dorton and KORT Physical Therapy - The Best in Rehab. The Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) state council and the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce are proud to host the Best Places initiative, as both organizations support the value of workplace excellence as a key component in moving Kentucky forward. “HR professionals are the CEO's strategic partner in creating an adaptive advantage for Kentucky's employers. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky program recognizes those employers who set an exemplary standard of excellence for both employee engagement and business success,” said KYSHRM Chair, Patrick Smith, SHRM-CP, PHR. According to Kentucky Chamber President and CEO, Ashli Watts, “In order to help Kentucky’s economy thrive, we must be able to educate and employ current Kentuckians, while also creating workplaces that attract talent from outside of the state. The Best Places program does just that.” For more details about Best Places to Work in Kentucky, visit bestplacestoworkky.com. 23 Fontana Lane, Ste 102 Rosedale, MD 21237 (443) 484-2394 cniemiec@MSImarinesolutions.com Yesterday we completed our first of many dives assisting CJ Mahan with the demolition and removal of Lock and Dam Number 52 on the Ohio River.
The Ohio River’s system of lock and dams begins in Pittsburgh, PA at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and ends at the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers near Cairo, IL, where more commerce traverses than any other location on the entire U.S. inland waterways. Lock and Dam Number 52, completed in 1929, is located about 1.5 miles downstream of Brookport, IL (near Ballard County, KY) at mile 939 below Pittsburgh. The locks are located on the Illinois bank of the river. Twenty-three miles downstream is Lock and Dam Number 53, approximately 11 miles upstream of Cairo, IL. These older locks are frequently congested, sometimes taking as long at 15 to 20 hours each to transit. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently completed the Olmsted Lock and Dam that will replace lock and dams Number 52 and Number 53. It was the largest Corps project since the Panama Canal. It consists of two 110-foot by 1,200-foot locks adjacent to the Illinois bank and a dam comprised of five tainter gates to control the amount of water that flows downstream, 140 wickets, and a fixed weir on the Kentucky bank. With the Olmsted Lock and Dam now operational, demolition of Lock and Dam Number 52 is underway. For the next year and more, Marine Solutions will provide underwater construction services assisting CJ Mahan with the demolition of Lock and Dam 52. These services will include underwater inspections, sediment removal, timber pile removal, steel sheet pile removal, removal of wicket gates and beartrap gates, and multi-beam bathymetric surveys. |
